Ellicott City is a part of the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area, as well as the county seat of local government in Howard County. Ellicott City bares all of the beauty of Colonial Maryland, with the architecture and homes showing a vast amount of personality. Ellicott City has also been listed among America’s most affluent communities by several sources, making it an excellent area to raise a family, retire or to seek new career opportunities. Its history begins in 1766, when James Hood used the “Maryland Mill Act of 1669” to condemn twenty acres for a mill site near the river. What would eventually become Ellicott Mills played a major part in the city’s history. In 1830, it also became the first terminus of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad outside of Baltimore. Over the years, and through numerous events, wars and development, Ellicott City would become the picturesque city that we know today.
Ellicott City is a part of the Atlantic Coastal Plain and is relatively flat, leaving it lying within the humid subtropical climate zone. This will mean especially hot, humid summers, cooler winters and a generous amount of precipitation year-round. Its low elevation and proximity to Chesapeake Bay allows for the area to have a more modest spring and summertime temperatures and less frigid winters, fortunately.
